The Bowen Technique is a non-invasive, holistic therapy. It consisting of a sequence of gentle moves over muscles and soft tissue, interspersed with periods of rest.
Practitioners and recipients are constantly surprised at the effectiveness of the Bowen technique. It is so light and non invasive. In delivering this therapy the body is provoked to rebalance, release and realign through the healing process in a totally holistic, or whole body way. The light moves over the edge of specific muscles mean that the treatment is operating on the fascia (connective tissue) which is found throughout the body at all levels. That can mean that a bowen rolling move over a muscle in one part of the body may have an effect on a different part.
A treatment usually lasts from about 45 minutes to an hour and can be applied through light clothing. A series of 3 treatments 5-10 days apart from each other is recommended in the first instance to assess the body response to the therapy, and to get the benefit of the cumulative effects of the therapy. Subsequent treatments follow in line with the body response and the client assessment of the benefits. Some conditions require an ongoing top up of treatments every 2-4 weeks for as long as is required (the more chronic the problem the more likely to need several treatments). Some shorter term issues are addressed and corrected within a very few treatments and the client may not feel the need for more sessions unless a relapse occurs for example. It can be argued that everyone needs the subtle corrections in the body (rebalancing, realigning and releasing) on a regular basis as we all use our bodies in an unbalanced way due to our daily activities, sports, or just simply by living our lives. Almost like retuning a radio station in this instance.
It is recommended that in order to obtain the full benefit, other ‘hands-on’ therapies are not applied less than 7 days before or after Bowen as these may interfere with the healing process.
The Bowen Technique was developed by Tom Bowen in Australia and named after him following his death in the early eighties. It has since flourished and spread world-wide.
